Appliance repair FAQ

Q. Is there a service charge to look at my appliance?
A. Yes, our service charge is $47.50 and is only charged if you decide not to have an appliance repaired.

Q. Is there an extra charge or fee to look at a second appliance?
A. The technician can look at up to 3 additional appliance's at no extra charge.

Q. Is there a warranty on services provided?
A. Yes, we offer a free 1 year warranty on all parts and labor. If your appliance malfunctions again and has the same problem within the warranty date we will, at absolutely no cost to you, service the appliance again. We also offer a free 3 year warranty for any sealed system repair work done including compressor, evaporator and condenser replacement.

Q. How long does it take to repair an appliance?
A. Most appliance's can be repaired on the same day and within only a few hours. All Amax technicians carry a large quantity of commonly used factor replacement parts. In some rare cases a part may need to be ordered but usually ships and is received within 2 days.

Q. What forms of payments does Amax take?
A. We accept all forms of payment, cash, check and all major credit cards. Please makes checks payable to Amax Appliance.

Q. Should I turn my refrigerator off or unplug before a technician comes out to my house for repair services?
A. It depends on the type of problem your refrigerator is having. If the refrigerator (compressor) is making a hmm....click sound then YES, unplugging refrigerator or setting cold control to "0" would be a good idea and can save you from futher repair cost. Otherwise I would suggest leaving refrigerator running making it easier for diagnostics.

Q. Can my refrigerator be repaired today?
A. Yes, we know the importance of having your refrigerator fixed on the same day and our specialty is offering same day refrigerator repair services as long as you call before noon. If after noon, same day refrigerator repair services may still be available.

Q. My refrigerator isn't cooling and I know it needs freon or a compressor, what is that going to cost me?
A. First, 1 in only 500 refrigerators with cooling problems need freon or a compressor. Compressor replacement or freon being added is actually a "rare" event. There are many components on the refrigerator that are cheaper and more likely to malfunction, such as thermostats, timers, thermistors, adc boards, damper doors, evaporator fans, switches, sensors, control boards, heating element (yes, all refrigerators since the 80's have a heating element), relays and more. These components can cause a compressor not to run. Most compressors are built strong and built to last! If, in the rare event that a compressor does need replacing cost is $600-$800 depending on brand/model and comes with a 3 year warranty.

Q. What temperature should my refrigerator and freezer be?
A. Refrigerator should be no warmer than 41 degrees and freezer should be between -2 and 10 degrees.

Q. Why is my refrigerator (fridge side) freezing food at the top?
A. First try setting cold control one or two notches warmer and see if that solves your problem, otherwise the damper door may be stuck open allowing to much cold air into the fridge side of refrigerator.

Q. My ice taste funny, what can I do?
A. Try changing the refrigerator filter, if this doesn't solve the problem water lines in refrigerator will need replacing.

Q. What brands of appliance's does Amax service?
A. General Electric (GE), Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, Sub Zero, Jenn Air, Amana, Hot Point, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Norge, White Westinghouse, Roper and more.

Q. My electric dryer turns but isn't heating, is there anything I can do to fix the problem?
A. Yes, electric dryers use 220volts to run therefore using two breaker switches in your fuse box. Sometimes, if one of the breaker fuses trips only providing 110volts to dryer, the dryer will turn but not heat. Turn both breaker fuses off then back on. If this does not solve your problem you will need a technician to service the appliance.

Q. My washer fills extremely slow, what can I do.
A. Make sure both cold and hot water valves are open completely. Check "screen" for blockage from water line to back of washer at the water valve (water valve is blue). If this doesn't solve your problem it is recommended to have a professional look at the appliance.

Q. My gas/electric dryer takes a long time to dry clothes, is there anything I can do?
A. Yes. First I would check lint screen for blockage. Next, turn the machine on and go outside where the dryer vent line exits the house and feel for warm air coming out. Not only should it be warm but more importantly it should be a "strong" blowing against your hand. If not blowing strong, you may need to clean your vent lines out. This requires pulling appliance away from wall a disconnecting dryer vent line. If you are one of the unlucky few who have dryer vent line that travels through the wall up into the attic, try blowing vent line out with a leaf blower. If your problem continues, call Amax for an appointment.
